2020 Women on Boards, a non-profit, national campaign to increase the percentage of women on U.S. company boards to 20 percent or greater by the year 2020, has named Assurant a Winning ‘W’ company for 2017, a recognition it also received in 2015.
Assurant’s board of directors is led by Elaine D. Rosen, who has served as its non-executive chair since November 2010. Also, board member Elyse Douglas was elected to the company’s governance body in July 2011 and chairs the Finance and Risk Committee. Debra J. Perry and Harriet Edelman joined Assurant’s board in August 2017, after 2020 Women on Boards performed its annual evaluation. The addition of Perry and Edelman increases the percentage of women on Assurant’s board of directors to 33 percent.
“At Assurant, we believe in fostering an inclusive culture that values voices from a variety of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives,” said Assurant President and CEO Alan Colberg. “Women leaders, throughout our enterprise, are integral to moving Assurant forward, helping to drive innovation and creating opportunities for growth that fortify our company and empower our employees.”
Assurant, and other companies in the Fortune 1000, were assessed by 2020 Women on Boards, then grouped into one of four categories based on their percentage of women board members. The 'W' award recognizes companies whose board membership is 20 percent or more female.
Inclusion and diversity have long been priorities for Assurant. Last year, Colberg joined 150 other CEOs to sign the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™ pledge, committing to work collectively to advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
